Broil heats, bake stays cold. On gas, usually the bake burner's ignition; on an electric or dual-fuel oven, the bottom element; now and then the control.
Which half of the oven has stopped heating
The top two rows are gas ovens, and they split by sound. Viking’s gas self-clean ranges light the bake and broil burners separately, each with its own spark electrode, from one ignition module that checks for flame before it keeps the gas on. Ticking with no flame means the spark is there but the burner is not catching or its flame is not being sensed: usually the electrode or the burner, now and then the valve that feeds it.
Silence is the second row. The module is not being asked to light bake, or cannot: the selector switch, a safety relay or the module itself. Broil still lighting proves the gas supply is sound.
Row three fits the dual-fuel ranges found in plenty of Tacoma kitchens, gas on top and electric in the oven. Broil runs the element in the roof and bake leans on the one in the floor. The last row is what remains once the heat sources test good: the switching that tells them to run, which is a relay or the board on electronic ovens and the thermostat on knob-controlled ones.
A bake electrode sits in the igniter band and a bake element in the oven band; the module, the selector and the gas valve are priced after the diagnosis.
Owner checks, in this order
- Check the selector is on bake and the temperature knob is turned up, not resting on a broil, convection or clean position.
- On a gas oven that ticked without lighting, turn both knobs to off, wait a minute, then try bake one more time. Once only, and never with a smell of gas.
- On an electric or dual-fuel oven, with the oven cold, look along the bottom element, where it is visible, for a split, a blister or a burnt spot.
- Have the fuel ready when you call. A dual-fuel range has gas burners on top and an electric oven below, and the two fail differently.

Can I bake on the broil setting until it is fixed?
Not with much success. Broil drives heat down from the roof and is not built to hold an even baking temperature, so tops scorch while middles stay raw. Use the burners meanwhile, and if a gas oven has ticked without lighting, stop trying it. Viking Repair Tacoma takes oven calls on (206) 472-1140.
Why does the second owner check only work once?
Because the oven gives up on purpose. On Viking's gas self-clean ranges, a few failed attempts to light make the ignition control shut the gas and lock out until bake is switched off and on again. One reset shows whether it was a passing hiccup; more only repeat a failure.
