Knob turned, gas on, and not a single tick. Usually power to the spark module, sometimes one switch or one wire; rarely the electrode itself.

No spark means no power, one switch, or one electrode

Start at the top line; it accounts for most silent ranges. A Viking has no pilot flame waiting in the background. Every burner is lit by a spark, and the spark runs on household current, so a power cut on your street or one tripped breaker silences every knob at once. In an older Tacoma house rewired a room at a time, the panel label is not always the circuit that feeds the range, so look for the handle out of line rather than the writing. The plug sits behind the range; reaching it is part of the visit, not a reason to drag the range out.

Line two is the reverse case: the oven light proves the power arrives, yet nothing ticks anywhere. On many four-burner Vikings a single spark module serves the whole cooktop, and when it fails every position goes quiet together. The module carries no published band on this site, so it is priced once it has been tested.

The third line belongs to one knob. Turning it opens a gas valve and closes a small switch in the same movement. A switch that no longer closes, or a wire that has worked off it, lets gas through with no call for a spark.

The bottom line only sounds like silence. Ticking carries on, but at one burner the spark leaks away through damp or a cracked ceramic sleeve instead of jumping the gap. A cracked electrode is replaced, and that is the one line on this table in the igniter and burner band.

Owner checks, in this order

  1. Heard nothing within a few seconds? Put the knob back to off first; it opens the gas whether or not a spark follows.
  2. Switch on the oven light. Dark as well means the whole range has lost power.
  3. At the panel, find a breaker handle out of line with the rest. Push it fully off, then on, once only.
  4. Try the knobs one at a time, a second each, and jot down which ones tick.
  5. Stop there. Anything past these checks means panels off or gas and wiring, and that is the $89 visit from Viking Repair Tacoma: (206) 472-1140.

Asked about this one

Can I light a burner with a match while the power is out?

Viking's use and care guides say no attempt should be made to operate the range during a power failure, and to set the oven control to off. Once the power is back it carries on as before, with nothing to reset. Knobs still silent after that need a visit: Viking Repair Tacoma books it on (206) 472-1140.

Why does a gas range need electricity to light?

Because a spark does the lighting. A Viking range keeps no standing pilot flame; every burner is lit by an electric igniter, and each knob is a gas valve and a switch in one. With no current there is no spark, however much gas reaches the burner, which is why a silent knob goes straight back to off.
