Water collecting under the crispers every few days. The melt water from each defrost is not reaching its drain, most often because the drain has iced or blocked.

Where defrost water is supposed to go

The top row is the usual story. Each defrost melts the frost off the cooling coil and sends the water down a drain at the back, into a pan underneath where it evaporates. Once that drain freezes shut or clogs, the water takes the only other route, forward and out under the drawers. Clearing the drain and fixing whatever let it freeze is priced in the refrigeration fan or defrost band.

Row two is more about the kitchen than the refrigerator. Each opening lets in warm, damp air, and a drain that is slow without being blocked can fall behind after a busy day. If the water follows the busy days and dries up on the quiet ones, the drain wants attention before it turns into row one.

The third row is not a crisper problem at all. Water in front of the unit usually comes from the pan underneath or from the line that feeds the ice maker. Viking’s guide expects some water in that pan during sticky summer weather; what it warns about is a pan knocked off level, which can spill. On the 5 Series built-ins that pan sits behind the kickplate and the water valve behind a tray at the foot of the unit, so both are checked at the visit rather than by you.

It turns up in a Hilltop townhouse as readily as in a Gig Harbor kitchen: the cause is the drain, not the address.

Owner checks, in this order

  1. Lift the crisper drawers out, dry the floor of the cabinet and note the date. How quickly the water returns tells us which row you are on.
  2. While the drawers are out, look along the bottom of the back wall for a ridge of ice; a phone photo helps when you call.
  3. If the water is on the kitchen floor instead, check the supply line only where you can see it without moving the unit, and look for drips at the grille.
  4. Keep kettles, wires and hair dryers away from the drain. Viking's guide rules out speeding the defrost by means it does not recommend.
  5. Stop there. Anything past these checks means panels off or gas and wiring, and that is the $89 visit from Viking Repair Tacoma: (206) 472-1140.

Asked about this one

Could it be the ice maker leaking?

Not often, if the water is inside the fresh-food cabinet. On Viking built-ins the ice maker sits in the freezer, well away from the crispers. Water on the kitchen floor is the case where the ice maker's supply line or valve comes into it. Viking Repair Tacoma sorts one from the other at the $89 visit; call (206) 472-1140.

Why does it come back every few days rather than all the time?

Because it follows the defrost cycle. Every so often the heater melts the frost off the cooling coil and that water heads for the drain. With the drain shut, it spills out and collects under the drawers instead. Between defrosts nothing new arrives, which is why the puddle keeps a timetable of its own.
